Title: NASA's New Space Architect: Integrating Innovation and Reliability

Abstract

If humanity is going to better understand our home planet and explore the universe, NASA is going to need an assortment of new tools and technologies. On October 11th, NASA HQ announced the key new position of Space Architect to integrate the Agency's Technology programs to better meet NASA's long-term goals in space. The speaker, the new Space Architect, will define how this new office will facilitate in the determination of future technology requirements and monitor development programs to ensure systems will be ready, when needed, to support next-generation science objectives.

Speaker

Gary Martin was requested to lead this new office in part because of his advanced concept work and integration management activities at GSFC and HQ. He began at NASA in 1990 as the primary interface for requirements between the microgravity science community and the designers of the Space Station. He was the Branch Chief for Advanced Programs (1992-94) within the Microgravity Sciences and Applications Division and the Division's acting Deputy Director (1994-96). He moved to Goddard to serve as Structure and Evolution of the Universe theme manager for Space Science. In 1997, Martin became the Chief of the then NASA Technology Planning and Integration Office, which managed technology development programs for two of the agency's primary enterprises and the SBIR and STTR Programs. In 2000, Martin returned to Headquarters to lead the Advanced Systems Office for Space Flight.
