"The NASA-Langley Gantry: A Visual History of Aircraft and Spacecraft Full-Scale Testing"

ABSTRACT -- Justin Littell will present a talk on the NASA Langley Landing and Impact Research Facility, colloquially known as the Gantry. The talk will include many visual examples and discussion about the types of tests that the Gantry has been used for over the years, starting with the simulated Apollo moon landings and continuing through present day aircraft crash and spacecraft splash testing.

SPEAKER -- Justin Littell is a Research Engineer in the Structural Dynamics Branch at NASA Langley Research Center working in the area of Aircraft Crashworthiness. He has been working at the NASA Langley Landing and Impact Research Facility for the past 15 years, where he conducts full scale, subscale and materials testing.

He is the technical lead on the Revolutionary Vertical Lift Technology Impact Dynamics Project where he is leading a team of engineers conducting research into various aspects of eVTOL crashworthiness, occupant protection and battery safety.

He is considered a subject matter expert in the areas of crashworthiness and his research interests include the research and development of novel energy absorbing materials and systems. He has authored multiple journal papers and NASA Technical Memos in the areas of composites, full-scale crash testing and photogrammetry.
