"A Physicist's View of the Automobile Engine"

ABSTRACT -- This talk is based on my article of the same title in The Physics Teacher (Vol. 42, p. 543, Dec. 2004), and will briefly cover three topics: (1) How and why the automobile engine evolved over the last 100 years; (2) Discussion of two recent automobile technologies--the hybrid and the hydrogen fuel cell automobiles; and (3) a prediction about the automobile of 2025.

SPEAKER -- Bernard J. Feldman received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and has been at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Missouri-St. Louis since 1974. He is currently professor of physics and associate dean of the Undergraduate Engineering Program. His research interests are in amorphous materials and, recently, physics education.
