"A View of Earth from Space, an Astronaut's Perspective"

ABSTRACT -- The experience of working in space and viewing earth from space has given a unique perspective to Astronaut Paul W. Richards. Now the Observatory Manager for the NOAA/NASA Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites R Series (GOES-R) he will be speaking on his experience as Mission Specialist aboard Shuttle Discover during STS-102, Earth Observing Satellites, and Geostationary weather satellites.

SPEAKER -- Astronaut Paul Richards received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Drexel University in 1987 and a master of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland in 1991.

He worked at the Department of Navy, Naval Ship Systems Engineering Station from 1983-1987, then transferred to NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in 1987 where he worked on the HST Project as Senior EVA Tool Development Engineer, Project Manager for HST EVA crew aids and tools, and Program Manager for HST EVA Hardware.

Selected by NASA as an astronaut in April 1996, Paul reported to the Johnson Space Center. He flew on STS-102 and has logged over 307 hours in space, including 6.4 EVA hours. Paul left NASA in February 2002 to become an aerospace consultant. In 2004 he returned to NASA GSFC as the Observatory Manager for the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-R Series).
