"How the Future Was: Visual Speculations of Tomorrow and Beyond"

ABSTRACT -- This is a visual survey of how images in the popular media helped pave our way into space. The presentation will include glimpses of Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon and other fictional adventurers from the press, early TV heroes such as Captain Video and Buzz Corey of the Space Patrol and images and clips from the Golden Age of science fiction films and before. Central to the presentation will be Collier's Magazine's famous 1950s space articles series and Disney's animated Tomorrowland episodes on our future in the cosmic frontier.

SPEAKER -- Vincent Di Fate has been an illustrator since the late 1960s and has produced thousands of images for publication. He is the winner of the prestigious Hugo Award—or Science Fiction Achievement Award—for Best Professional Artist (1979), the Rondo Award for Best Cover Art (2003) and the Lensmen, the Frank R. Paul Award, The E. E. "Doc" Smith Memorial Award and the A.S.F.A. Award, all of which were given for lifetime achievement in his specialty of science fiction and fantasy art. He has also created art for NASA and the aerospace industry and has been a consultant to MCA/Universal, 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Productions and MGM/United Artists.

He is a past president of the Society of Illustrators (1995-1997), the author of four books and of countless articles on a variety of topics, including art, popular culture and the sciences, and is a full Professor in the Illustration and Film programs at the Fashion Institute of Technology (SUNY).
