"Advances in Internal Combustion Engines"

ABSTRACT -- Despite recent technological progress in fields like batteries and fuel cells, the internal combustion engine remains dominant when it comes to vehicle powertrains. Thankfully, the industry hasn’t been standing still, and the past few years have seen some clever advances, including turbulent jet ignition, variable compression ratios, and compression ignition.

SPEAKER -- Jonathan Gitlin received his BSc in Pharmacology from King's College London, and his PhD in Pharmacology from Imperial College London, and followed up with postdoctoral work at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA, and the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY, where he also taught International Science and Technology Policy at the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Relations. In 2009 he left academia for a position as a Science Policy Analyst at the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland.

He began writing for Ars Technica in 2004, contributing a weekly science column while still a postdoc at Scripps. Following the move to NIH he continued contributing to Ars Technica, but conflicts of interest meant staying away from stories involving federally funded biomedical research, changing instead to ones involving automotive technology or racing—a long-held passion.

In 2014, Ars Technica started dedicated coverage of the automotive industry, in response to the growing intersection between it and the tech sector. As the resident subject matter expert Jonathan was named Automotive Editor, coming onboard full-time as of 2015.
