"Visions of the Future: Graphic Design for NASA, Star Trek, and Beyond"

SPEAKERS -- Michael and Denise Okuda are world-renowned graphic designers, artistic consultants, and technical experts for TV and movies productions, best known for their work on Star Trek. They have also worked for the Smithsonian and for NASA.

Denise and Michael wrote the Star Trek Encyclopedia and co-produced The Roddenberry Vault Blu-Ray set. They also served on the Smithsonian Institution’s special advisory committee on the restoration of the Starship Enterprise (Original Series) filming model, now on display at the National Air & Space Museum.

As the lead graphic designer for Star Trek, Michael Okuda has earned screen credit on more Star Trek productions than anyone except Gene Roddenberry. His designs include control panels, computer readouts, and alien written languages, appearing in movies and TV series, starting with Star Trek: The Next Generation and continuing through Enterprise. He has three Emmy nominations for Best Visual Effects.

Michael's life-long fascination with the real space program led him to design the mission patch for STS-125, HST's final Servicing Mission. His NASA work also includes the team emblem for Mission Control (Flight Operations Division), the project logo for the Orion Multipurpose Crew Vehicle, and the Spaceflight Memorial Patch (with Bill Foster), which hangs on the wall of Mission Control at Johnson Space Center. Michael has also produced designs for the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. He has received NASA's Exceptional Public Service Medal.

Denise Okuda served as video/computer playback supervisor and graphic artist for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise, as well as for several Star Trek movies. She co-wrote the catalog for the Christie's auction of Star Trek costumes and props in 2006, and has been a consultant and writer for several Star Trek museum exhibitions. Denise was artistic consultant, along with Michael, for CBS Home Entertainment's remastered version of Star Trek: The Next Generation. They were creative producers for new visual effects for the HD remastered version of the original Star Trek series. They have done voice and text commentaries for numerous CBS and Paramount Star Trek DVDs and Blu-ray releases, and did a comedic in-universe text commentary for the Blu-ray of Galaxy Quest. Denise has appeared on screen as an extra in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and in digitally-remastered scenes of the original Star Trek series.
