"Firefighting at the Pentagon on 9/11"

ABSTRACT -- Within 30 minutes of two planes hitting the World Trade Center's Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, another plane crashed into the west side of the Pentagon. Firefighters from across the Washington metropolitan area assisted with firefighting and rescue efforts. Brian will recount the almost seven hours he spent at the Pentagon on 9/11, close to three of which were firefighting duties during four separate forays into the building as a member of the Greenbelt Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.

SPEAKER -- Brian Roberts is the Robotic Technologist in the Satellite Servicing Projects Division at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. His team is maturing the robotic technology needed to perform satellite servicing in space as well as developing the capability to simulate the dynamics of a robotic system interacting with space objects.

Brian spent 15 years as a volunteer firefighter, EMT, public safety diver, and swiftwater and ice rescue technician with the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department, the largest and busiest career, civilian, and volunteer department in the country. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and completed a Master of Science in the same field at the University of Maryland, where he also completed coursework in Fire Protection Engineering.
