"Moving Lighthouses and Other Large Structures"

ABSTRACT -- This talk will describe the engineering challenges involved in moving lighthouses and other large structures. In 1999, the speaker participated in moving the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, which is 210 feet tall and weighs 5,000 tons. The shoreline was eroding, putting the lighthouse in danger of falling into the water. So the National Park Service contracted with Expert House Movers and their parners, ICC, to move the lighthouse over half a mile away from the ocean. This project, which has been called the "Move of the Century", won the Oustanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) award from the American Society of Civil Engineers.
